Common Questions: The Prostate

What is prostatitis? Is it a prostate infection?

The prostate also can have prostatitis, which is broadly classified as bacterial prostatitis and non-bacterial prostatitis. In other words, prostatitis is sometimes, but not always, a prostate infection. Another classification is acute prostatitis and chronic prostatitis. With acute, bacterial prostatitis, antibiotics are often an effective remedy.

Like benign Prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis can be very symptomatic. While like benign prostatic hyperplasia it can cause frequent urination, prostatitis often can also be associated with pain, pressure, and fever.

Contrasted with benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis is seen in relatively young men. Neither benign prostatic hyperplasia nor prostatitis is a form of prostate cancer.
