Common Questions: The Procedure

Is there surgery for prostatitis?

Prostatitis is a loose term for conditions that cause a range of symptoms -- pain, burning, and pressure feelings -- that may be from the prostate. In some cases, prostatitis and become a chronic and debilitating disease that can interfere with function and quality of life. Men with chronic prostatitis are often left with few good treatment options.

There are no good data to support surgery for prostatitis. However, there are sporadic reports of men with chronic prostatitis -- pain, bleeding, burning -- that have had complete symptomatic relief with radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate and seminal vesicles). Again, these reports are sporadic and the surgical approach to prostatitis has not been tested in large trials.
